Day 5 - our first full day in Broken Hill

After breakfast we wandered around Patton Village. The main attraction is Bells Milkbar, a preserved, 1950's style Milkbar with a small attached museum. My caffeine for the day was an iced coffee milkshake!

We then headed around to the centre of town and on up to the Line of Lode Miners Memorial, which sits atop the lode / mullock mountain. The memorial commemorates the 800 or so miners who lost their lives in the Broken Hill mines from the 1890s up to the present day.

The memorial provides panoramic views over the city - it is the rust coloured building on the left, the other is a restaurant.

From the memorial we headed back down and wandered around the town centre. We visited the impressive city art gallery and then had lunch the Astra Hotel, originally the Commercial Hotel built in 1891.

From here we visited the Silver City Mint and Art Centre where Diane purchased some silver earrings and Pandora charm (both made onsite). We then headed the Albert Kersten Mining and Minerals museum which has an amazing display of the minerals found in the local area as well as the Silver Tree, a table centrepiece created from 8kg pure silver
We finished the day by checking out the White Rocks Reserve which was the site of the only battle of World War I fought on Australian soil. I can remember my grandfather telling me about the incident as he was living in Broken Hill at the time. The photos tell the story
