We then headed for coffee at Bell's milkbar before going to the Royal Flying Doctor Service Base. A really interesting attraction with historical displays, a movie and tour, including the hangar. The RFDS covers the medical needs of remote communities in western NSW, south west Qld as well as parts of SA.
From the base we headed out to Silverton, which as the name suggests is an old mining town. There were once 3000 people living at Silverton, but now only 40. It really started to die out once Broken Hill got going. The first thing to see on the way into the town is the old railway station. The line fell into disuse once the standard gauge line was extended from Broken Hill into SA.
We then went and checked out some galleries (a number of artists are now based in the town) and had lunch at the iconic Silverton Hotel. Many movies, including some of the Mad Max series were will in the area, and the pub contains lots of memorabilia
We then spent some time exploring the old ruins that are all over the place
On the driver back into Broken Hill we came across a herd of camels. They don't seem too worried about cars or people.
