Day 8 - leaving BHAnd on to Peterborough

Still a couple of things from Day 7:

- I've included a photo of the view from the back of the Miner's Rest - this the Broken Hill South mine, which currently does not operate. I thought it looked good in the setting sun

We had dinner at Broken Earth as planned. Great atmosphere, overlooking the city, and excellent food. No photos Sarah, but mum n I shared Bombe Alaska for desert - definitely recommended.

Today we were on the road out of BH by 10am, heading for Peterborough, which was an important railway town up until the 1970s. The terrain was again very flat, but not really boring, as the road paralleled the main Sydney to Perth railway. We saw several fast moving goods trains - notice the double stacked containers.

We arrived at Peterborough in time to take part in a guided tour of Steamtown, which occupies the
old railway depot. Peterborough was a major railway hub, the largest in SA outside Adelaide, so the site is quite impressive. They have a couple of steam locos in good condition

The major interest is the different types of rolling stock and the stories that go with them. One particularly impressive example is a first class lounge car from the original Transcontinental railway

Once the tour was over we relaxed for a while then had dinner at......yep, the Railway Hotel.

After dinner we returned to Steamtown for an impressive sound and light show. The audience sits in an historic passenger wagon on the triple gauge turntable. in the carriage, the seats have been swivelled sideways so you look directly out the windows at the illuminated roundhouse, then a movie specially made for steamtown on a screen in front of the roundhouse. Very impressive and professionally done - they concentrate on telling a story rather than getting caught up in technical detailes that would be of limited interest.
